 Hamilton Powerbladers Inline Hockey

Celebrating our 15th Year in 2009

The 2009 season is rapidly approaching. This will be the 15th season of operation for the league. We would be remiss if we hadn’t learned some lessons from the past and as such there will be some minor changes made to the way the league is administered for 2009. Our past efforts to accommodate every player had unfortunately resulted in inconvenience to other players, parents and volunteers. Operating from a second facility also stretched our volunteer base and added problems, such as the City double booking the second facility and creating a domino effect with the balance of the schedule. As a result we will continue the procedure of 2004 and be limiting registration to six teams per division this season. “All” games will be played out of Valley Park Arena as per the schedule on the reverse side of the enclosed flyer. Limited registration provides the opportunity to work to an advanced fixed schedule and hopefully eliminate the past problems associated with late registrations.

 Registrations:

(Open to everyone on first come, first served basis)

  • Limited Registration:
  • 6 Teams per division only. (We will not be adding teams)
  • All Games at Valley Park
  • 10 Game  Minimum
  • Advanced fixed schedule Strict rules regarding the drafting of teams, the goal being balanced teams, fair play and a fun league.

Recreational House league:

OLDEST eligible players are born no earlier than 1990 for this season (2009)

Attendance by players has been an issue in past years and created a hardship for coaches and other volunteers.

It is hoped with one date, players and coaches can make firm arrangements, along with our electronic retention of past evaluations and drafts, balanced teams can be picked with less problems for all involved.

The growth of volunteers has not kept pace with the popularity of inline hockey.  We are forced once again to limit the size of the league to match the volunteer base.  We are doing everything possible to encourage early registration so players from past years are ensured a spot for 2009.  We had waiting lists in 2005 in some divisions for skaters and goaltenders

Representative Tournament Teams

AAA & AA Teams  Subject to coaching volunteers and number of players, per age group may be formed.  Teams will be registered in appropriate competitive level-AAA or AA

Tryouts will be announced subject to coaches and players

Here hoping we have a great 2009 inline hockey season!

Equipment

For those of you who are new to inline hockey, this is the official line on equipment:

The player agrees that they must wear approved protective equipment including helmet, full-face mask, shin pads, elbow pads, hockey gloves, hockey pants with protective girdle, athletic supporter, with cup and long sleeve hockey jersey. (We supply the jersey) Shin and elbow pads must be covered.

Although shoulder pads and mouth-guards are not mandatory under Ontario Minor Roller Hockey Association rules, Hamilton Powerbladers recommend that all players wear them. Neck-guards are not required.

Ice hockey pants are perfectly acceptable and many players wear them. There is however a “cool” factor involved with wearing roller hockey pants. These pants are usually brightly coloured with lots of graphics. From a practical side they are a lot lighter and better ventilated. They will however require the use of a protective girdle.  The choice is yours.

Stopper type brakes on skates are not allowed. The fact that they protrude from the skates creates a safety problem. Players also get tangled up with them when trying to do crossovers. Hockey style skates with soft urethane wheels work best.

Sticks with ABS blades or nylon heel inserts work best. No tape is allowed on the blades because it comes off and someone could slip on it. Rubberized blade facings are available at better sports stores for about $6.00

 Mission Statement

Working in conjunction with Ontario Minor Roller Hockey Association  and The City of Hamilton, the Powerbladers will vigorously promote the sport of Inline Hockey and endeavour to provide an opportunity for as many youths as possible to participate, both male and female. To encourage excellence at both the recreational and competitive level.
